Finding Us

We are located on the R600 about 29m from Winterton, and about 2km from the Monks Cowl Nature Reserve.

From Johannesburg / Pretoria (ROUTE 1 – RECOMMENDED):

  • Take the N3 South to Harrismith (about 280km from Johannesburg)
  • Take the N5 towards Bethlehem for around 2-3km, and then take the left turn on the R74.
  • After about 8-9km take the LEFT turn onto the R74 towards Bergville.
  • NOTE: This road was under serious repair for many years, but this is now a top class road and is the recommended route.
  • This takes you past the Sterkfontein Dam.
  • Drive to Bergville, and then onto Winterton, which is about another 20km from Berville.
  • As you enter Winterton turn left at the traffic lights towards the Central Berg onto the R600 road.
  • After about 10km you get to a stop sign, and you are at Thokozisa.
  • Take the instructions below from Thokozisa to Ondini.

From Johannesburg / Pretoria (ROUTE 2 – LONGER)

  • As for ROUTE 1 towards Harrismith.
  • Then stay on the N3 towards Ladysmith.
  • Past the toll and take the R616 / N11 towards Ladysmith (away from the mountains) for 4.5km
  • Then turn RIGHT onto the R600 towards Winterton.
  • At the end of this road (about 33km from where you turned right), you will get to a T-junction.
  • TURN LEFT towards Winterton, and after 1km you will get to the traffic lights, and then turn right towards Central Berg, on the R600 road.
  • After about 10km you get to a stop sign, and you are at Thokozisa.
  • Take the instructions below from Thokozisa to Ondini.

From Durban:

  • Take the N3 North towards Estcourt.
  • At the THIRD Estcourt turnoff, which is EXIT 179 from the N3, turn left onto the road towards Loskop.
  • After 30km you will arrive at an intersection with the Thokozisa centre on your left. TURN LEFT here. If you do go on my mistake this become a gravel road immediately and you will know you are on the wrong road.

From Thokozisa to Ondini:

  • This is the only major entrance to the Champagne Valley and it is around 19km to Ondini directly on this R600 road.
  • It is recommended that you stop at Thokozisa and enoy the shops and restaurant there and the view of the Drakensberg some 30km in the distance. If you have really good eyes you can see the Ondini Guest House which is the highest property in the foothills of the Berg.
  • The drive to Ondini will pass a number of key milestone points including The Next Hotel (on the right), the Champagne Sports Resort (on the left), the turnoff to the Drakensberg Sun (DO NOT TAKE THIS – on the right), the Drakensberg Boys Choir School, and then the split-pin bend which raises you up about 100-200m about the valley.
  • At the the top of this bend is Fernwood and you are now 2km from Ondini.
  • Continue up and up and look on the RIGHT for the sign.
  • If you start going down and find the Champagne Castle Hotel entrance, then you have gone about 400m too far.
